Unit 3. TRADITIONS. CRACKERS.

Christmas crackers.

To open it, someone has to pull from one side and someone else has to pull from the other side of the cracker. When it breaks there is a BANG! sound. From inside you can find sweet, a paper-crown and a paper with a joke.

This is very popular in the UK.

Unit 3. TRADITIONS. CRACKERS.

WATCH A VIDEO ABOUT CRACKERS. IT IS VERY INTERESTING!

A cracker consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated twist of paper, making it resemble an oversized sweet-wrapper. The cracker is pulled by two people. The cracker breaks with a small BANG! In one version of the tradition the person with the larger portion of cracker empties the contents from the tube and keeps them. In another each person will have their own cracker and will keep its contents regardless of whose end they were in. What´s inside the cracker?

1. a coloured paper hat or crown
2. a small toy or other trinket and a motto, a joke or piece of trivia on a small strip of paper.
3. sweets.

DECORATION AT CHRISTMAS:

The Christmas tree is often explained as a Christianisation of pagan tradition. The modern Christmas tree tradition is believed to have begun in Germany in the 18th century. From Germany the custom was introduced to Britiain. By the 1870s, putting up a Christmas tree had become common in America. Christmas trees may be decorated with lights and ornaments.

In Australia, North and South America, the British Isles, and to a lesser extent continental Europe, it is traditional to decorate the outside of houses with lights and sometimes with illuminated sleighs, snowmen, and other Christmas figures.

Other traditional decorations include bells, candles, candy canes, stockings, wreaths, and angels.

In many countries a representation of the Nativity Scene is very popular, and people are encouraged to compete and create most original or realistic ones.

Christmas decorations are traditionally taken down on Twelfth Night, the evening of January 5.
